MECHANICAL ENGINEERING DESIGN

Assessing various mechanisms to design a solution for a quick disconnect device for lower limb prostheses

QUICKFIT

  • A quick disconnect device for lower limb prostheses
  • Group project
  • Materials: Aluminum rod, bike clamp
  • Goal: Design a lightweight device that allows users of lower limb prostheses to quickly and safely disconnect part of their leg for enhanced maneuverability and comfort
  • Worked closely with Stanford prosthetic clinician Gary Berke
  • Brainstormed several ideas for quick disconnect
  • Modeled favorite solution in Solidworks
  • 3D printed prototypes
  • Turned down pylon (shaft) on lathe
  • CNC machined features onto aluminum shaft
  • Video below shows our prototype (left) in comparison to the current market solution (right)
